How to Choose Your Surgeon

Following an accident and you have sustained significant injuries that are seemed to require serious medical attention such as a help from a general surgeon or specific surgeon to perform a medical procedure on you, thinking about it stresses us out and leave us confused as a victim that tops off from the feeling of trauma and shock from the accident or health condition you are facing, yes, it is overwhelming and uncertainty spreads all over our head. The process beforehand increases one's anxiety as he/she does need to find a trust-worthy surgeon that caters all your medical needs and stabilize one's mental state for the duration while offering low cost operation.

Specifically, aside from obvious injuries sustenance that requires sugeries, other reason why people seek surgeons is because when other treatments doesn't work, it could be a sign or imperative to go to a surgeon. The most common type of surgeon most people seek is the general surgeon, they have wide knowledge of general injuries and perform most emergency related procedusre such as appendicitis, gallstones, gunshot wounds, and even removing a shrapnel from a car accident.

Though finding the right surgeon for you may not be easy as for an instance, there would be no time for an individual to choose one if he/she is at an ambulance following an accident which requires immediate specific medical procedure and who's in front of the victim would be likely his surgeon and it would just be a luxury or a rare opportunity where you can find your own surgeon or times where your health condition isn't in dire need and has time for scheduling and finding a proper surgeon.

How do one find a good surgeon?

There few conventional steps on how to find right surgeon for you which are the most accessible steps that ranges from asking someone to asking yourself. Here are some of them:

First, get a short list of potential doctors:

  • Primarily ask your family member or a friend who was their surgeon in the past or their known surgeons that would serve as your short list based on their knowledge in local medical scene.

  • Ask your physician who is their best known surgeon that usually is called when there is a surgery conducted in the local hospitals.

  • If you are living in a remote neighborhood, try checking up the internet, there are websites that offer directory for professionals including surgeons which includes their license and certifications needed for a patient to trust.

Second, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I really need surgery?

  • Do I have enough financial means to commit for a surgery?

  • What are my qualifications for a surgeon?

  • Does it have to be done immediately?

  • Do I know the surgeon and is he apt for the job?

Third, ask surgeons these questions:

  • How often do he do these kind of procedures?

  • How long have he been doing these procedures?

  • What is his surgical wound infection rate? Can you compare it to other hospitals?

  • Who is doing the critical parts of my surgery?

  • What are the most common problems that happen with this surgery?

  • What do you do to keep risks to a minimum? How often do they happen even when everyone is careful?
